In 2008, Taiwan Society of Health System Pharmacist (TSHP) completed two research projects closely related to the handling of antineoplastic agents, which were sponsored by Department of Health, Executive Yuan and Bureau of National Health Insurance, respectively. In order to integrate the products from these two projects, the Task Force of Taiwan Guidelines on Handling Hazardous Drugs under TSHP was formed. After detailed and rigorous discussions, the guidelines were established in accordance with not only the well-known international guidelines, but also the local situations in Taiwan and the standards achievable within recent years. This is the first guideline regarding the handling hazardous drugs in Taiwan that is developed by broad range of expertise, including pharmacy, nursing, toxicology, and occupational safety. It covers complete information on the definition, toxic level categorization, and protective levels of hazardous drugs available in Taiwan and those procedures needed to be performed by physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and cleaning personnel. It is also approved by Oncology Nursing Society of Taiwan and the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. With the implementation of the standardized guidelines, all health care professionals and the environment could be protected and the safety and quality of patient care could be improved.
