ABSTRACT
Objective: This study aims to explore the needs of pharmacists for continuing education courses and to analyze the impact of different background factors on these needs, providing a reference for future continuing education course planning.
Methods: A self-structured questionnaire was distributed to pharmacists participating in continuing education at Taipei City Hospital from October 2020 to December 2023. The questionnaire covered demographics, course demand, content preferences, scheduling, venue, and teaching methods.
Results: A total of 329 valid responses were collected. Most respondents (61.1%) worked in a regional hospital, and 53.5% of the respondents had more than 10 years of work experience, and the majority had a university degree (64.4%). Among the respondents, 59.9% preferred having classes on Saturdays, 69.9% favored a classes duration of 4 hours, and 92.1% prioritized transportation convenience in venue selection. Respondents from universities and colleges favored courses focused on professional quality, whereas respondents with master's degrees and doctoral degrees preferred specialized courses. Pharmacotherapy was the most popular course topic, and pharmacoeconomics was the least popular course topic. The traditional lecture format was the most popular teaching method and the preference for online courses increased significantly from 44.9% before the 2020 pandemic to 82.9%, 73.4%, and 64.9% after the pandemic (2021-2023), showing a statistically significant increase in preference post-pandemic.
Conclusions: The continuing education needs of pharmacists vary based on education level, workplace, and job tenure. Course selection is primarily based on content relevance, indicating that Taiwanese pharmacists participate in continuing education to enhance their professional skills. Although lecture-based courses remain the most popular type, the acceptance of other teaching methods has increased, reflecting changes in learning preferences. It is recommended that course organizers consider offering 4-hour continuing education courses on Saturdays and choose convenient locations to increase pharmacists' willingness to participate.
