ABSTRACT
Objectives: The degree of anti-drug attitudes is crucial for drug use motivation. Previous studies show that males aged 20 ~ 29 have had the highest rates of firsttime drug use for five consecutive years. Understanding factors affecting anti-drug attitudes will help formulate strategies. This study aims to explore factors influencing anti-drug attitudes among male conscripts.

Methods: We surveyed 20-29-year-old conscripts to investigate their awareness and attitudes towards the anti-drug movement. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used to identify factors related to low anti-drug attitudes.

Results: A total of 1,274 valid questionnaires were collected. 72% of respondents lived in metropolitan cities, and 90.8% had undergraduate degree or higher. The prevalence rates of tobacco, alcohol, and betel nut use were 17.3%, 15.5%, and 1.6%, respectively. Users of tobacco, alcohol, and betel nut had lower anti-drug attitudes in the dimensions of “informing about drug hazards” and “drug refusal skills and confidence.” After adjusting for confounding factors such as residence, education, use of tobacco, alcohol, and betel nut, anti-drug awareness, and anti-drug education, the odds ratio for low anti-drug attitudes was approximately 2.1 for alcohol users and 3.6 for betel nut users in “refusal skills.”

Conclusions: Many studies have suggested that the use of tobacco, alcohol, and betel nut are risk factors for lowering anti-drug attitudes. However, our study found alcohol to be the primary risk factor. This finding could assist the government in formulating drug abuse prevention policies.
